Gucci brought Charli XCX and Troye Siva to perform at the LACMA Art+Film Gala last night

The Art+Film Gala, which raised a record $6.4 million tonight, is a critical part of the fundraising efforts to realize that vision. And in contrast to the more old-fashioned clothing style most guests chose at the Academy Museum Gala last month, the LACMA evening promoted a more modern approach to glamour. Brat green was alive and well (see: Kaia Gerber, Gabriella Kaefa-Johnson), as were white suits for men. The gala was once again sponsored by Gucci and about half of the notable looks came from Gucci's creative director and gala committee chairman, Sabato De Sarno. The Gucci gang included Kim Kardashian (wearing a purple stone cross that once belonged to Princess Diana), Cara Delevingne, Andrew Garfield, Colman Domingo, Vittoria Ceretti and Laura Dern – as well as both of the evening's honorees.

Simone Leigh, the pioneering sculptor whose first survey exhibition is on view at LACMA through January 20, was introduced on stage by philanthropist Bryan Stevenson, who recounted how he traveled to Venice for the first time in his life to celebrate her Biennale exhibition 2022 can be seen. Not an overnight success, Leigh looked around the room and remarked, “This moment reminds me of my daughter coming home from school and telling me that her friends thought I was cool.”

Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, in a blue velvet suit reminiscent of '90s-era Gucci, was introduced by his good friend and decades-long collaborator Anna Wintour. She talked about her travels around the world and acknowledged his extraordinary creativity (and perfectionism) with openness. She mentioned a time when Baz was still finishing editing a film and they drove together to that film's premiere. “Baz can't let go of his work,” Wintour said, “and if you've done work like that, why should you?” As Baz took the stage, he dedicated the honor to his wife and creative partner, Catherine Martin, of his age 25 or 20 years ago in King's Cross during a seven-hour conversation about the state of art. “Whether it’s fashion, music, painting or theater… there are no silos,” said Luhrmann. “All creative people try to do is…reach and touch people.”

Charli Despite the cold in LA, the sweat was still noticeable.
