Guy Fawkes is here; The city's police are on standby

Guy Fawkes is here and the city's police and emergency services have been put on high alert. The city says members of its security directorate will refocus their operational response in the lead-up to and towards Guy Fawkes, focusing on areas that have emerged as hotspots in recent years.

The city says it has seen a decrease in reported incidents in recent years, noting that this is a testament to the work of its law enforcement agencies.

“We have seen very encouraging signs in recent years that what is seen as Guy Fawkes celebrations has declined. I would like to appeal to the general public to help maintain this momentum by denouncing bad behavior and denouncing those who insist on engaging in this destructive behavior,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith.

Despite the decline, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith says staff will remain on high alert. He urges drivers to be careful and parents to keep a close eye on their children.

Pet owners have also been advised to monitor their pet's whereabouts for the duration of this weekend. Smith says this is important, especially since it's outside the city's jurisdiction.

“Monitor your animals and keep them indoors if possible to minimize the risk of injury from illegal fireworks. A fireworks ban is the best solution, but unfortunately that is outside the city’s jurisdiction, but we will make sure we do our part to contain it as best we can.”

A summary of the rules of conduct for fireworks

  • There are no designated fireworks displays in Cape Town for Diwali, Guy Fawkes or New Year's Eve
  • Fireworks events are only permitted if the required permit has been applied for and approved
  • The law prohibits the illegal firing of fireworks, the sale of fireworks to anyone under the age of 16, or the handling of fireworks without adult supervision

Residents are asked to report any incident, suspicious behavior or criminal activity by calling the City's Public Emergency Communications Center on 021 480 7700 from a mobile phone and 107 from a landline.
