Halifax Walmart death: Worker's father and brother come to Canada from India

The organization helping the family of a young employee found dead in a Walmart store in Halifax says her relatives are on their way to Canada.

The Maritime Sikh Society confirmed that Gursimran Kaur's father was granted an emergency visa on compassionate grounds. He and Kaur's brother are making arrangements to come to Nova Scotia to be by their mother's side.

“We are providing her with comprehensive psychological support,” said society secretary Balbir Singh.

“It's constantly, either the psychologist or the psychiatrist visits them.”

According to the society, it was Kaur's mother who discovered the 19-year-old in the oven at the big box store on Mumford Road on October 19.

Both mother and daughter are members of the Sikh community and have worked at the Walmart store for about two years. The company said the couple moved to Canada about three years ago and are originally from India.

The case has made headlines across Canada and India – and Singh said the society has received news from around the world.

The GoFundMe fundraiser set up by the society raised $190,000 for the family.

Singh also confirmed that Walmart also provided financial support to the family.

“They want transparency”

Rumors about the case continue to circulate, particularly on social media, and Singh described it as hurtful.

He said he and the family hoped the police investigation would provide more information.

“They want transparency. You want them to provide regular updates so that people connected to the case know what's going on,” he said.

Halifax Regional Police said the investigation is ongoing and “complex.”

Meanwhile, the provincial labor ministry on Monday lifted a stop-work order that had been issued for the store's bakery section and one piece of equipment.

The store remains closed, but Walmart has paid its employees to work during the closure.
