Here's how to vote in person on Election Day in DC, Maryland and Virginia

Polls in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia will open on Election Day. Here's what you need to know to ensure you can vote in person at your polling place:

How to vote in person in DC

In Washington, DC, voters can cast a live vote by completing same-day registration or updating their information in their assigned precinct.

Same day registration:

If you are not registered, you may register at any voting center with acceptable proof of residency. Acceptable forms include: Current DC DMV-issued ID card, current bank statement, or utility bill (dated within 90 days). Rental agreement or government document with your name and address.

Voting process:

After providing proof of residency, you will complete a registration update form and receive a live voting slip.

If proof of residency is not provided, you will be voting on a special ballot and must provide acceptable proof in order for the count to occur by 5:00 p.m. on the Thursday following Election Day.

How to vote in person in Maryland

Marylanders have the option to vote either during early voting or in person on Election Day. For the 2024 presidential election, early voting runs Thursday, October 24, 2024, through Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can vote early at any early voting center in your county.

Election day:

Where: Your assigned polling location

Time: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m

Important information:

You may bring one or two children under 18 to vote, as long as they do not disrupt the voting process.

Cell phones, pagers, cameras and computers are not permitted in early voting centers and polling locations.

You may bring printed materials, including a marked ballot, to assist you in voting.

First-time voters may be required to present ID. Acceptable forms include: Current photo ID (e.g. Maryland driver's license, US passport) Current utility bill or bank statement with your name and address (dated within 3 months).

You can wear clothing, pins or stickers with political messages, but you must leave the polling station immediately after voting.

Write-in votes are allowed in general elections, but not in primaries. Instructions for voting by mail will be posted at polling stations.

How to vote in person in Virginia

Virginia law requires voters to present acceptable identification or sign an attestation statement at the polls.

Voting requirements:

Voters without valid ID can sign an ID confirmation or vote provisionally.

In order for their votes to be counted, provisional voters must provide identification or sign the ID Confirmation Form by noon on the Friday following the election.

Acceptable IDs:

Review the list of acceptable voter IDs before you go to the polls.

Preliminary election process:

Voters without ID will receive written instructions on how to present their ID or sign the ID verification form after provisional voting.

IDs or signed statements may be submitted by fax, email, in person or by mail, but must be received by the local board of elections by noon on the Friday following the election.

On Election Day, November 5, polls across the Commonwealth of Virginia will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
