Hoboken Council President Jen Giattino dies at 53

Hoboken City Council President Jennifer Giattino, a former professional ballet dancer and mother of three who became a prominent player in local politics and a zealous advocate for good government and transparency, died suddenly Nov. 5 at her home. She was 53.

“Jen’s commitment to our community will never be forgotten. Her kindness, humility and quiet determination made her a valued individual whose influence will be felt for generations to come,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla.

The four-term city councilwoman championed sustainability projects, advocated for small businesses and carefully monitored the city's spending and tax dollars.

Giattino was elected to the Ward 6 City Council in 2011, defeating incumbent Nino Giacchi by 106 votes, 55% to 45%. She had the support of Mayor Dawn Zimmer.

She was re-elected in 2015, defeating Rep. Carmelo Garcia by a massive margin of 59% to 41%. Garcia had been removed from the assembly list; He admitted earlier this year to taking bribes and is awaiting sentencing.

In 2019, Giattino won a third term against Cristin Cricco-Powell 53% to 43%, while a third candidate, Frank Rosner, received 4%.

Her last election campaign in 2023 was a landslide: Giattino won 66% of the vote, securing a fourth term against Lauren Myers (24%) and Ian Rintel (10%).

Giattino ran for mayor in 2017. Her colleagues elected her council president six times and were considered a potential mayoral candidate for next year.

Joe Giattino, her husband, said she was “an incredible mother but also a dedicated public servant who cares deeply about this community.”

“Jen’s unwavering commitment, kindness and passion have touched so many lives here in Hoboken,” he said. “We are devastated by her loss and I ask for privacy for our family as we try to navigate this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and for keeping Jen in your thoughts and prayers.”
