Homegrown hero Pisilli helps Roma defeat Venezia, but the team's problems are far from over

MILAN (AP) — Roma's problems are far from over, despite new coach Ivan Jurić's two wins in two league games as Giallorossi coach.

Homegrown midfielder Niccolò Pisilli, who grew up as a Roma fan and rose through the ranks in their youth team, scored his first Serie A goal on Sunday, helping Roma to a 2-1 win over newly promoted Venezia.

Venezia were leading at half-time, which sparked huge celebrations from the Roma fans.

Napoli will look to continue their impressive run when they host winless Monza later.

Roma had finally done it first win of the season last Sunday, just a few days later Jurić was replaced the fired one Daniele De Rossi. There were fan protests during the game against Udinese and the enthusiasm was dampened by a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League in midweek.

Venezia took the lead in Rome just before half-time. Gianluca Busio curled a shot at the far right post, but Joel Pohjanpalo reacted quickest to the rebound and fired into the bottom left corner.

Venezia almost scored another goal by halftime when Roma defender Gianluca Mancini cleared Gaetano Oristanio's shot off the line and goalkeeper Mile Svilar was left stranded after another shot from Pohjanpalo.

Ridgeciano Haps had a goal for Venezia ruled out for offside early in the second half before Roma equalized in somewhat fortunate circumstances in the 75th minute.

Bryan Cristante's powerful shot took a massive deflection off Busio and landed between Venezia goalkeeper Jesse Joronen and the crossbar.

And Roma completely turned the game around eight minutes later when Pisilli, who turned 20 last Monday, headed a corner at the near post.

First defeat

Torino suffered its first league defeat of the season, losing 3-2 at home to Lazio.

Torino had entered the weekend as surprise leaders but fell behind in the eighth minute when Nuno Tavares broke down the left and came back from the byline for Matteo Guendouzi.

It was Tavares' fourth assist in as many games after the defender joined Arsenal on loan in the off-season.

Boulaye Dia doubled Lazio's lead after the hour but Che Adams reduced the deficit seven minutes later when the Scotland striker scored for the third time in a row.

Tijjani Noslin almost sealed the win for Lazio in the final minute when he scored within 30 seconds of coming on as a substitute. Saul Coco saved Torino in stoppage time with an impressive, acrobatic volley into the top left corner.
