India vs Bangladesh: Jaiswal, Kohli and Rahul star as hosts break records

India set a number of batting records on the fourth day of the rain-damaged second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.

The hosts, who lead the two-match series 1-0, surpassed the record for the fastest team in Tests to 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 as they made 285-9 from 34.4 overs as Reply to Bangladesh's 233 overs.

There was still time for the Indian spin bowlers to reduce the tourists to 26-2 in their second innings – they were still 26 runs behind going into the final day.

It was India's aggression with the bat that grabbed the headlines – they scored their first 50 after just three overs, surpassing their record in both one-day and T20 cricket.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal set the pace with the fastest 50 by an Indian opener, eventually falling to 72 off 51.

His opening colleague and captain Rohit Sharma scored sixes off the first two balls in his swashbuckling 23 off 11.

Virat Kohli (47 off 35) and KL Rahul (68 off 43) also shone as Bangladesh struggled to stem the flow of runs.

India's run rate of 8.22 was by far the highest of any team to score more than 200 runs, surpassing Australia's 241-2 against Pakistan in 2017 and finishing in second place.

It was also the earliest result in terms of the number of overs India had to face for the first innings – the 34.4 overs comfortably surpassed the 89.4 overs they faced against the same opponents in Kolkata in 2019.

It is India's first Test series since appointing former opener Gautam Gambhir as head coach.
