“It's Just Been So Long”: Marina Squerciati Talks How Burgess Wants to Rise in Chicago PD and What Still Needs to Change

Chicago PD returns to the TV program after a week's break in autumn 2024, and the new episode on November 6th will be a big event for Burgess. After more than a decade of watching the police drama One Chicago as a CPD officer, she's on her way to becoming a detective… assuming all goes well despite the politics ahead, and that's never a guarantee. Marina Squerciati spoke to CinemaBlend about what to expect, including why the plot took so long to arrive and what still needs to change for Burgess.

The next episode of Chicago PD is called “Pawns” and the promo reveals that Burgess will be one final step away from becoming a detective. Burgess, Ruzek and Atwater were all officers from the start and the intelligence unit lost its two main detectives when Halstead left the CPD and Upton moved on. That's why I asked Marina Squerciati if she had any idea ahead of Season 12 that Burgess might be next in line to try out for the promotion. The actress said:

I mean, one of us had to give in, right? It's just been so long. I knew it was one of us. I didn't care which one. (laughs) I just wanted one of us to make it… There was a vacancy. A few (openings), so it's time.
