James Van Der Beek is battling colon cancer

James Van Der Beek is battling colon cancer… TMZ has confirmed.

The 47-year-old actor, best known for “Dawson's Creek,” was recently diagnosed with the disease – he told People that he is undergoing treatment to cure the disease.

Van Der Beek says that despite the scary diagnosis, there is reason for optimism. He doesn't explain exactly what he means here, but adds that he's fine.

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer begins in the colon or rectum, which makes up the large intestine.

It's unclear exactly how long Van Der Beek has been battling the disease… but he's doing his part to help people like him who suffer from it. He is expected to appear in “The Real Full Monty” – a two-hour special in which he and other major stars strip to raise awareness of certain types of cancer.

Van Der Beek will bare it all in the co-starring role of the show Anthony Anderson, Taye Diggs, Tyler Posey“Dancing with the Stars” judge Bruno Tonioliand defensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs Chris Jones.

He has continued to work despite the diagnosis in recent months… this year he appeared in an episode of Walker. He also has a new film – “Sidelined the QB and Me” – currently in post-production.
