Jeff Ulbrich 'not worried' about Greg Zuerlein after missed kicks cost Jets against Bills

The winds raged at MetLife Stadium on Monday night and the Jets ended up losing their 23-20 loss to the veteran kicker Buffalo Bills Greg Zuerlein missed two field goals in the second half.

With the score tied in the third quarter, Zuerlein – who had already hit two extra points and a 22-yard field goal – prepared for a 32-yard attempt from the left goal post but deflected it at the left post.

He had a chance at redemption after a Buffalo punt to give the Jets a lead again, but this time, as he was kicking at the other end of the stadium in the fourth quarter, his 43-yard attempt drifted from just inside the right marker to the left and hit the left post again.

“It bothers you as a player because you see how hard they work and I don’t keep my end of the bargain,” Zürlein said after the game about his missed shots. “That’s up to me.”

He added: “Just not good kicking.”

Despite Zuerlein's bad night and poor start to the season – having previously missed a potential game-winner late in the fourth quarter against Denver in Week 4 and a 45-yard attempt in a Week 3 win – he is interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich gave the veteran a vote of confidence.

“Everything you look at closely, but I’m not worried about Greg,” Ulbrich said. “I know this man’s track record and I know that he will find his rhythm here and we will get going.”

With the misses, the 13-year NFL veteran became the fifth kicker since 2010 to miss two field goals within 45 yards while his team trailed by three points or fewer in the second half.

“I’m trying different things to try to fix the problem,” he said. “I go to training every day and often it's great, but I have to eliminate those bad kicks because they cost us.”

“It’s just one of those things,” Zuerlein continued, “you just have to hit a better ball.”

Over the last two years, Zuerlein missed just three of 25 shots from 40 to 49 yards. He reached that mark in six games this year, needing just four attempts.

“I've been through ups and downs, hell and back many, many times,” said the 36-year-old kicker about his career. “And right now it's not good, it's not good enough because those guys in the locker room deserved to win. And they deserve to win another game this season.”
