JJ Watt explains the frustrations of playing against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick: 'Two of the best there ever was'

Former Houston Texans Defensive end JJ Watt was a player most in the NFL were afraid to line up opposite. But there was one duo that managed to frustrate Watts even on his best day: Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

During the weekly episode of “Let's go! podcast” With legendary sportscaster Jim Gray, Watt had the opportunity to personally tell the former New England Patriots coach exactly how he felt playing against one of the league's best dynasties.

“It's really frustrating, especially when you're going up against a head like coach (Belichick) and a quarterback like Tom, because on our side you can do whatever you want – we're going to try and obfuscate things all week,” said Watts.

“We say, 'Okay, we'll throw it at two highs and then turn it down to a single high look.' You do it and think you're brilliant. It's like that little kid who thinks he's deceiving his parents, and then at the last moment their parents say, 'No, I know exactly what you're doing.'”

said Watts No matter how good his pass rush was, Brady was simply too fast to beat.

“Tom just comes up, he makes a check, he knows exactly where he wants to take the ball and then shoots it there. And everything you've done all week is for nothing. And it's frustrating and it's so annoying, and then from my perspective as a defensive end, the coach throws a chip my way, so I have to beat the tackle, I have to beat the chip, luckily I have them both in beaten on one play and guess what? Tom threw the ball in 1.7 seconds, so I didn't manage to hit the ball anyway, and it was all for nothing, and that's the most frustrating part of it all. That worked out so well because they just always knew how to eliminates the best player in defense.”

Watt continued to praise Belichick and Brady as “two of the best there ever was,” and he had only one complaint to add about the time they spent playing against each other during his 12-year career.

“I just wish I could say I hit her a little more.”

Watts spent the majority of his career with the Texans. During this time, the patriots defeated the Texans 6-2, with Houston winning the last two meetings.

But the frustration seemed mutual. Belichick said he has to game plan every play with a player like Watt.

“If you’re running for a Hall of Fame, you have my vote.”
