Joe Mazzulla announces crazy rule changes for the NBA, including power plays and fighting

Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla made an appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak and Bertrand radio show on Tuesday morning where he was asked what rule changes he would consider for the NBA.

His answer did not disappoint.

Mazzulla didn't hesitate to name a few rule changes he would like to see, with a focus on the introduction of a power play in the NBA as well as the return of fighting.

“Basketball is one of the few sports that doesn’t allow power plays…we should have a power play. There should be a power play where if you get a foul or a technical you have to play five on four for five seconds or three passes,” Mazzulla said. “I think we should introduce power plays where you, rather than the ball on the side, commits a foul, the guy goes to the other side of the half court and can't leave the half court circle for three seconds.”

Then he turned to the idea of fighting.

“The biggest thing we've robbed people of from an entertainment perspective is that you can't fight anymore,” he said. “What’s more entertaining than a little brawl? How come they get to clear the benches during baseball? How come they’re allowed to do that in hockey – I don’t understand it. I just don't understand why some sports are allowed.” To clear the benches, they have bats and weapons, we don't. We have a ball.

It's safe to say that the league could look completely different if Mazzulla ever takes on the role of NBA commissioner. Whether it's giving teams a man advantage after a foul or inciting physical altercations between two players at odds, the Celtics coach has had no shortage of ways to increase the conversation on the court.
