Jon Stewart extends contract to host The Daily Show on Mondays until December 2025

Jon Stewart won't be leaving The Daily Show desk any time soon.

After returning to the satirical news program in early 2024, Stewart has extended his contract and will host “The Daily Show” every Monday until December 2025. Stewart will remain an executive producer of the show.

Correspondents on “The Daily Show” news team will continue to share hosting duties for the remainder of the week. Current rotating presenters include Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta and Jordan Klepper.

“I really enjoyed working with the incredible team at The Daily Show and Comedy Central again. “I was really hoping they would allow me to be there every other Monday, but I just have to suck it up…” Stewart said in a statement.

When asked at the Emmys in September whether he planned to renew his contract with “The Daily Show,” Stewart joked, “Well, I feel like this election is never going to end. So why should I? How could I leave? I won't be allowed to go before the election until we're all stuck with some sort of calcified nub. … We’re looking forward to it being terrible.”

From 1999 to 2015, Stewart hosted “The Daily Show,” helping the series gain critical acclaim and 23 Emmy awards. When he left the show before Donald Trump's term as president, comedian Trevor Noah took over until 2022. “The Daily Show” did not immediately find a permanent host after Noah's departure, but alternated between guest hosts such as Sarah Silverman, Hasan Minhaj, Chelsea Handler , Wanda Sykes, Al Franken and Kal Penn.

Minhaj was offered the gig as the next host of “The Daily Show,” but the deal fell through after a profile of Minhaj in The New Yorker revealed that the comedian had embellished stories in his stand-up appearances.

When Stewart returned to “The Daily Show” in 2024, he brought the show to its highest ratings since 2018.

“Jon’s incisive intellect and sharp wit make him one of the most important voices in political and cultural commentary today,” said Chris McCarthy, co-CEO of Paramount Global. “His ability to cut through the noise and provide clear insight is exactly what we need. That’s why we’re excited to have him at the helm of The Daily Show for another year.”

“The Daily Show” airs weekdays at 11 p.m. on Comedy Central. On election night, November 5, the series will air a live special hosted by Stewart.
