In January 2023, Kim Kardashian purchased Princess Diana's famous Attallah Cross necklace at auction, and in the nearly two years since then, she has never worn the piece in public.

However, to celebrate Kardashian's birthday in late October, Lexy Roche, image director at Maison Margiela, shared a never-before-seen photo. In the picture, Kardashian is wearing a black and purple tulle dress – and in particular she is wearing the famous cross pendant as an accessory. It's also the first time Kardashian has worn the necklace:

Princess Diana wore the jeweled cross, known as the Attallah Cross, along with a Catherine Walker dress at a charity gala in October 1987. The gold, silver, diamond and amethyst pendant was named after Naim Attallah, who owned it and lent it to Diana on several occasions. “Few people could carry this piece away, but Diana really could,” his son Ramsay Attallah said before the auction. “We always had it on the table for Christmas dinner when I was growing up, but it was never worn by anyone other than Diana and it hasn’t been seen in public since her death.”

The cross “demonstrated how Princess Diana wore her jewelry with a mix of reverence and playfulness and was more than just a nod to fashion, as we saw in her mischievous way of wearing both fine and costume jewelry,” the author said and jewelry historian Vivienne Becker fashion. “The size and impact of this cross, unusually worn on a long necklace, also indicates Madonna's 1980s style and star quality. In addition, the amethysts refer to royalty – amethysts have traditionally been associated with both the clergy and royalty.” “

It's unclear what event Kardashian was trying on the cross for – possibly the 2024 Met Gala, where she wore a custom Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano dress. We'll just have to wait and see if she'll wear the cross in public.
