Kirk Herbstreit gives us the Lee Corso update we needed

College GameDay is back where it belongs – SEC country (if you count Texas as SEC country) – and so is Lee Corso.

After a questionable few weeks, Corso will return to his longtime spot later this morning when GameDay visits Austin ahead of tonight's showdown between Texas and Georgia.

According to host Rece Davis, the 89-year-old had missed the last two weeks of shows because he was “under the weather,” but fellow analyst – and caretaker – Kirk Herbstreit announced late yesterday that Corso would return today.

Luckily, Lee Corso bucks the trend

Phewwwwwwwwwwwww. I'm not going to lie, this one made me a little uneasy. I know we've had some fears with Coach Corso in the past, but this one seemed a little strange to me.

And I would know. As someone who works the Saturday morning shift, I am well versed in writing College football fans are worried about Lee Corso Blogs. Unfortunately, in recent years they have become somewhat routine.

Corso struggled mightily in 2022, but finished strong after missing several weeks at the start. Last year his participation was almost flawless, which was nice to see.

This year, however, it was a bit iffy. He did not travel to Dublin in Week 0 and was missing virtually the entire month of October with an undisclosed illness. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if this “disease” was something like the “South Beach Flu” you hear about when players travel to Miami.

Are they really sick or have they just partied too much? That's how I felt when Corso missed the last two weeks in California.

Look, Lee is a billion. Not really, he's 89, but still – that's basically a billion in years. Flying him from Orlando to California isn't exactly a good idea.

I said it last week and still somewhat stick with it now – maybe Lee just wasn't interested in flying that far for College GameDay. I wouldn't. Would you?

Could you imagine leaving your nice, cozy home in Central Florida to fly five hours to the West Coast to do a show at 6 a.m.?

Yuck. No shot. Now imagine being 89 years old and trying to do all of that. No thanks.

Be that as it may, this is all a thing of the past – for now. Lee Corso is back and College GameDay is back where it belongs.

Let's celebrate a big Saturday.
