Lara Trump fumes as CNN host calls Donald's Hurricane Helene a lie

CNN's Dana Bash and Lara Trump argued about misinformation spread by Donald Trump about North Carolina's disaster relief funding, with the host refusing to let the former president's daughter-in-law get away with dodging their questions.

Bash pushed back against the Republican National Committee co-chair as she tried to back down from her father-in-law's dubious claims that FEMA is only offering a few hundred dollars to Americans whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Helene.

“I don't want to allow this to come to light,” the presenter replied on Sunday's edition of State of the Union.

“You’re right that FEMA donates $750 (to each family),” Bash said. “But this is a first step for immediate needs. It’s called help when you have a serious need.”

Bash's correction got under Lara Trump's skin.

“They’re out of money for hurricane relief,” Lara Trump said. “We have another hurricane heading toward Florida right now. But they said there is no money at the moment. Why don’t they have anything in order?”

When Lara Trump again tried to deviate from the original question by saying that most of the help would come from local citizens, Bash stood her ground.

“It's bad there. But my question is about the misinformation, particularly the idea that they are transferring money to, say, illegal migrants, which FEMA says is simply not true. If people don’t get accurate information, they can’t get help,” Bash said before a Trump interruption.

“In New York City, migrants are being housed in luxury hotels,” said Lara Trump. “We have paid so much of our tax money into the crisis. This didn’t have to happen.”

“It's a matter of money,” Bash replied, clearly tired of having to correct her guest. “This has nothing to do with the people in your home state right now.”

Bash has consistently defended herself against criticism of her interview style.

After an interview with Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, she said, “The fact that no one was happy in their entrenched camps makes me think that I was probably in exactly the right place.”
