Still at the top of the college football food chain, the No. 1 Oregon Ducks played their second Big Ten Conference road game for the third time this season against the unranked Michigan Wolverines. This matchup has been a long time coming, as the last time the Oregon Ducks entered the Big House in 2007, their 39-7 victory became a historic game for the program.

The Ducks and Wolverines have faced each other five times: 1948 (Losing Oregon), 1960 (Losing Oregon), 1973 (Losing Oregon), 2003 (Losing Oregon) and 2007 (Losing Oregon). Oregon has only won one of the four games played in Ann Arbor over the years.

Perhaps Oregon's most legendary win against the Wolverines came in 2007, when the Oregon Ducks defeated Michigan 39-7 in the Big House. During that game, then-offensive coordinator, soon-to-be-former Duck coach Chip Kelly, called the famous “Statue of Liberty” play a fake, in which former Duck quarterback Dennis Dixon faked a behind-the-back handoff to Jonathan Stewart before he kept the ball and rushed for a touchdown.

Stewart discussed this piece with KOIN 6 Sports and the Oregon Ducks earlier this year on Sports Illustrated's Ally Osborne when he spoke with co-host and former Duck colleague Kenjon Barner on his podcast “Ducks of a Feather.”

“Yeah, those are plays you see in movies, backyard football,” Stewart said. “And you think: That's never going to work in a game, maybe a high school game, but you know, on a national level like that? The courage to go to Ann Arbor and call the game. It was a testament to who we really were and how much confidence (Chip Kelly) had in his players. We were prepared. We ran this play almost like we do every practice. And we just always thought, “Hey, practice the way you want to do it.” You never know when you're going to have to execute it. And sometimes with these plays you can get silly and just go through the motions and whatnot. But he described this game of work as perfect.”

In honor of their historic 2007 victory, the Ducks will wear all-white “Warp Speed” jerseys in this contest. This uniform is part of Oregon's 2024 Generation O uniform line. Inspired by the previously released “Fly Era” uniforms, the shoulder pads are a combination of carbon fiber wings and steel plating from old Oregon uniforms. Silver and chrome details run throughout the uniform. The number in the middle is perforated and has a color-changing green base meant to represent the head of a mallard duck.

After a clear 38:9 home win against the Illinois Fighting Illini, the Ducks appear to have overcome all the problems that plagued them at the beginning of the season. Dillon Gabriel went 18-26 passing for 291 yards against Illinois and is right at home in an Oregon offense heavy on short passes. Senior Jordan James continues to pave the way for the Ducks, with a now cohesive offensive line held together by center Iapani “Poncho” Lalolou and strong performances from left guards Nishad Strother and Marcus Harper II.

On the defensive side of things, the Ducks' defensive line with former Michigan State Spartan Derrick Harmon appears to be unstoppable. The Ducks held the Fighting Illini to 0-3 on fourth downs and 5-13 on third downs while limiting their total offensive yardage to 293 total yards and grabbing three sacks.

Michigan is currently in a rebuilding year after winning the national championship. Former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh left the program, leaving Sherrone Moore in charge of a team with more than 20 departing transfers and seniors. After constant changes at quarterback and the recent retirement of Jack Tuttle for medical reasons, the Wolverines will have to make up for current starter Davis Warren with another change at quarterback.
