Wild Card Round

With Providence Park hosting at BC Place due to scheduling conflicts, the ninth-seeded Timbers will receive home-field advantage against the eighth-seeded Whitecaps in the Western Conference Wild Card Game of the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs. In a single elimination game, the winner of Wednesday's match will face Los Angeles FC in the first round (October 25th to November 10th).

If Vancouver and Portland remain tied at the end of the 90 minutes, there will be a penalty shootout to decide who advances. There is no extension.

The opponent: Vancouver Whitecaps FC (8th, 13-13-11, 47 points)

After a strong start to the season that saw them lose just two of their first 10 games in 2024, Vancouver endured a true roller coaster of a season. They remained in the top four of the Western Conference for weeks before suffering relegation following the 2024 Leagues Cup. Since the peak of the Intraleague summer tournament, the Whitecaps have recorded just two wins from eleven games, eliminating the home playoff seed and entering the Wild Card round.

Attacker Ryan Gauld leads Vancouver to the postseason and recorded 25 goal contributions during the regular season (10g, 15a). Forward Brian White's 15 goals are the most by a Whitecap in 2024, and FafΓ  Picault added nine goals of his own to round out the attack. Sebastian Berhalter (7g contributions) and Ralph Priso (2a) recently occupied the midfield, while goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka and defenders Ranko Veselinovic and Tristan Blackmon fended off the opponents in the background.
