Maxwell Air Force Base is conducting an emergency response exercise Thursday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The 42nd Air Base announced it will conduct an emergency response exercise on Thursday, October 17th.

The exercise will take place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex. This exercise will include training scenarios designed to help prepare service members to respond to emergency situations, a Maxwell AFB spokesman said.

There may be increased noise and activity during this exercise, including sound effects, simulated gunfire, messages from the giant voice systems, sirens and sounds of emergency vehicles. Visual effects such as smoke may also occur.

Additionally, members will be on site during the training exercise to ensure public safety.

Base personnel have implemented the following measures to reduce potential disruption to the community and base operations:

  • The exercise may result in an increase in traffic around the base or delays in access to the base, including temporary closures of inbound and outbound gates. However, the gates are only interrupted briefly to demonstrate performance before normal operations resume.
  • The Base Exchange, Shoppette, Commissary, Maxwell Credit Union and Gunter Pharmacy will not be affected by any part of the exercise.
  • Maxwell and Gunter Child Development Centers, Maxwell and Gunter Youth Centers, Gunter School Age Centers, and DODEA Elementary and Middle Schools are exempt from all portions of the exercise. This also includes dropping off and picking up the children.
  • Air University students, faculty and distinguished visitors at Maxwell AFB & Gunter Annex are exempt from all exercise segments. This exception applies to travel in vehicles, visits to buildings or facilities and exercise outdoors.

In the event of a real situation, the exercise will be canceled and the base will be notified via official correspondence and the AtHoc notification system.
