Mega Millions is increasing the price of lottery tickets next year

Playing the Mega Millions lottery will become more expensive next April.

The price of a Mega Millions lottery ticket will increase by $3 to $5 at that time, the lottery said in a news release Monday.

The upcoming 150% increase – the second ever for the lottery – will come with a “new and improved” version of Mega Millions, which lottery officials plan to launch in April.

Mega Millions said the “mega revamp” of the lottery game will result in the size of jackpots growing more quickly and the frequency of large jackpots increasing.

Players will see “larger starting jackpots” thanks to “enhancements” coming in April, the lottery said.

Additionally, Mega Millions said they can also expect “improved odds of winning the jackpot” compared to the 1 in 302.575 million odds offered by the game’s current matrix.

According to the lottery, Mega Millions will include a “built-in multiplier on every spin that automatically increases any non-jackpot win by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x” and “no breakeven -Prices” offers.

Mega Millions last fundamentally overhauled its lottery game in 2017.

This redesign also included a price increase that increased tickets to $2, the current retail price for Mega Millions. Previously they had cost $1.

With the April revamp, Mega Millions is creating “a game that both our existing players and people new to Mega Millions will love and be excited to play,” Joshua Johnston, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a statement.

“We expect more billion-dollar jackpots than ever before, which means that as jackpots increase, more billionaires and many more millionaires will be created. Additionally, this game will continue the important legacy of supporting great causes wherever Mega Millions is played.”

The largest jackpot in Mega Millions history – $1.602 billion – was drawn in August last year. In five other cases since 2018, people have won top prizes of more than $1 billion.

New Jersey's $1.13 billion award is unclaimed and has a deadline

Mega Millions last won a $1 billion jackpot at the end of March, when a ticket from New Jersey won a $1.128 billion windfall.

Fellow lottery Powerball has also produced its share of huge jackpots.

Of the two lotteries, the 2022 Powerball jackpot is the largest at $2.04 billion.
