Memphis forward Tyreek Smith is entering the NCAA transfer portal

Memphis forward Tyreek Smith has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3's Pete Nakos. Smith transferred to Memphis this offseason SMU. However, on October 20, Smith informed the head coach Penny Hardaway that he would resign from the team.

Following Smith's decision, his representative became Young Money Sports allegedly that Memphis had not paid for the forward transfer in the four months he was with the team and had broken other promises to Smith.

Unfortunately, Gary Parrish of CBS Sports later reported that Memphis paid Tyreek Smith $175,000, which was reportedly a third of what he had originally agreed to. If this is true, Memphis would not be behind on its payments at all.

Whatever the reality behind the scenes, it is obvious that Smith will not be playing for the Tigers this season. This is the fourth time Smith has entered the transfer portal while in college.

The 6-foot-11 Baton Rouge native began his college career at Texas Techwhere he spent two years, including a medical redshirt season. He then switched to Oklahoma Statewhere he amassed 66 appearances and 16 starts.

After two seasons with the Cowboys, Smith transferred to SMU prior to the 2023-24 season. In his only season with the Mustangs, Smith made 33 appearances and 13 starts, averaging 8.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting 58.4% from the field.

After moving to Memphis this offseason, Smith was in the running for the Tigers' starting power forward position. However, he won't be now as he is looking for a new home.

On Monday, Memphis will begin its season at 8:00 p.m. ET when it takes on the Missouri Tiger on the FedEx forum. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
