Met Gala 2025 Announces Co-Chairs: Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo and More – Essence

Fashion's biggest night, the Met Gala, just got a little cooler. The Costume Institute and fashion have announced that Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky and Anna Wintour will each co-chair the 2025 Met Gala. The honorary chairman will be none other than NBA legend LeBron James. We are sure that these people will add their own touch to the prestigious evening. The Metropolitan Museum of Art also announced the Costume Institute's spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”

That's not the highlight, the exhibition is based on the 2009 book by Monica L. Miller. Slaves of Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Shaping of Black Diasporic IdentityMiller is also guest curator of the exhibition. Accordingly Fashion, “The exhibition will feature garments, paintings, photographs and more – all exploring the indelible style of black men in the context of dandyism from the 18th century to the present.”

All of this news is pretty exciting. Hamilton has been a regular fixture at the Met Gala for years. His sporting prowess in Formula 1 combined with his reinvigorated race day style was a sight to behold, breathing life into the often closed sport. Separately, Domingo, who is staking his claim as one of Hollywood's fastest-rising fashion stars, attended his first Met Gala this year. Having these co-chairs in addition to Williams just makes sense. Especially given Pharrell's current role as creative director at the renowned Louis Vuitton mansion. That being said, Williams has been a standout in hip-hop when it comes to style – his ensembles have been sumptuous over the years and have broken countless barriers. This is his sixth appearance at the Met Gala and second as co-chair.

It goes without saying, but A$AP Rocky is another character whose level of style is unmatched. The New York native has been experimenting with brands and silhouettes for years. His title as co-chairman is fitting. He's had a pretty explosive year so far. This will be James' first Met Gala. His athletic ability coupled with the style moments he has instilled in the NBA and high fashion industry are worthy of a platform.

It's important to think of the title character, Andre Leon Talley, when making these announcements. Since the exhibition will explore black dandyism by proxy, Talley's name comes to mind. His understanding of how marginalized people like himself show up in the world was a lasting legacy that the late multi-hyphenate left behind to his centuries-old fans.

fashion reports that the Met Gala will return to New York City on May 5, 2025. The dress code is expected to be announced in early 2025. “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” will be on view from May 6th to October 26th, 2025.
