Mets-Braves doubleheader: New York wins Game 1 and clinch postseason berth

Mets-Braves doubleheader: New York wins Game 1 and clinch postseason berth

The New York Mets are in the MLB playoffs. They punched their ticket with a wild 8-7 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader and will play when the wild-card round begins Tuesday.

The two games were postponed last week because of Hurricane Helene, which caused some chaos in the MLB playoffs ahead of the start of the Wild Card Series on Tuesday.

With the Mets winning Game 1 and securing their spot in the postseason, the Braves must win Game 2 to also get in. If they split the doubleheader, both are in and the Diamondbacks are out. To break it down a little further…

  • Atlanta is there with a win. The Braves can only be the No. 5 seed.

  • new York comes in with a win. If the Mets win on a Monday, they are a No. 6 seed. If they win both, they are a No. 5 seed.

  • Arizona comes in if either Atlanta or New York sweep the doubleheader. The D-Backs can only be the No. 6 seed.

Date: Monday, September 30th

  • Grant Holmes will start for Braves in Game 2, replacing Chris Sale

Rookie Grant Holmes gets the starting job in Game 2, which the Braves must win. Entering Monday, he posted a 3.78 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings in 25 appearances (six starts).

Holmes pitched 1 2/3 innings and threw 21 pitches on Sunday, so he's likely just an opener for Atlanta in a bullpen game.

  • Chris Sale wins the National League and lifts the Triple Crown after being ejected in Game 2

With the Braves' season on the line, Chris Sale was waived for Game 2.

On the bright side, Sale will win the National League pitching Triple Crown with a 2.38 ERA, 18 wins and 225 strikeouts for the season. He is the first NL pitcher to do so since 2011, when Clayton Kershaw led the league in the three major categories.

With Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal winning the AL Triple Crown, it also marks the first time since 2011 that pitchers from both leagues have won the Triple Crown in the same season.

  • It's over! Mets win 8-7 and go to the postseason!

It was an unlikely back-and-forth game, but the Mets managed to emerge victorious after trailing 3-0 early in the 8th inning.

This game featured two separate comebacks and two separate key home runs. Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run homer in the 8th and Francisco Lindor hit a two-run homer in the 9th to retake the lead for the Mets.

  • Diaz is trying to secure the Mets' postseason berth

The Mets are just three outs away from securing the 11th postseason berth in Mets history.

Despite his problems in the 8th game, Diaz is out in the 9th game. And after one pitch, he's having a rash when Matt Olson shows up.

  • You can't keep the Mets down! Lindo smashes the 2-run homer!

Francisco Lindor may have single-handedly saved the Mets from a Game 2 attempt. He smashed a massive two-run home run (his 33rd of the year) to give the Mets an 8-7 lead. Is this game real?

  • Braves take the lead!

Diaz almost walked the second batter in a row on four pitches, but with the score 3-0, Ozzie Albies doubled and cleared the bases loaded. The Braves regain the lead 7:6!

  • Now Diaz loads the bases…

Diaz could melt down. After failing to cover first base, he walks the next batter on four pitches.

  • Edwin Diaz allows a run after failing to cover first base

Diaz makes an untimely and potentially tragic mistake by failing to cover first base after a quick grounder that could have been an out. A run scores, but the Mets still lead 6-4. The difference? Nimmo's two-track jack. Without that, the Mets will be in even more trouble than they are now.

  • Will the Braves get runs back?

Oh boy. After Mets reliever Phil Maton struck out two of the first three batters, the Mets asked closer Edwin Diaz to get five outs on his second straight day of work. Oh, and he threw 30 shots in a 5-0 win on Sunday.

    Let's see how that works.

  • “Brandon Nimmo hits a two-run homer, crushing the Braves’ spirit.”

The Mets were 0-47 when they trailed by more than three runs in the 8th inning. Til today. Until Brandon Nimmo hit that two-run home run against the Braves.

  • The Mets have a 3-3 tie with Jose Iglesias' single!

  • Mets celebrate comeback, now 3-2 in game 8

The Mets are just one run away from clinching the game in the eighth inning. Starling Marte singled, and then Francisco Lindor followed with a single that scored Francisco Alvarez. Braves still lead 3-2, but there are no outs in the eighth inning.

  • The Mets are aliiiiiiive!

The Mets have a heartbeat in the 8th! Jimenez allowed a double down the third base line on his first pitch, scoring Taylor to make it 3-1.

  • Mets get leadoff double from Tyrone Taylor

The decision to leave Schlafenbach in to start the 8th inning immediately backfired on manager Brian Snitker. Schlafenbach fought off Tyrone Taylor in an 11-pitch at-bat that gave the Mets their first extra-base hit of the day.

Despite the XBH for Taylor, Wechselbach was outstanding. He was replaced by right winger Joe Jimenez.

  • Schlafenbach rises to No. 8, will he come back to bite them?

The Braves have to be confident because they let Ruhenbach go for the first time in the 8th inning. That's quite a risk at an important time, but you don't win games if you're careful. Will it pay off?

  • It's getting late for the Mets…

Adam Ottavino came into the game to pitch a flawless seventh inning for the Mets, but it's getting late. They still have two more chances to score at least three runs before the second game becomes a must-win game.

  • The Mets make Grimace sad

  • Spencer Hügelbach continues to mow down Mets

Schlafenbach got off to an excellent start for the Braves. He completely stunned the Mets in seven error-free innings.

  • Mets cut Megill and replaced him with Huascar Brazoban

After throwing 100 pitches, one shy of his season high, the Mets elevated Megill in the bottom of the 6th and replaced him with reliever Huascar Brazoban.

  • The Braves extend their lead to 3-0 with a solo home run from Ramon Laureano
