MLB playoff results, live updates: Tigers and Guardians meet in ALDS Game 4 as Detroit looks to advance

The Detroit Tigers are eyeing their first American League Championship Series appearance since 2013, and with a 2-1 series lead against the Cleveland Guardians, there's only one team left fighting for their playoff spot in ALCS play 4 on Thursday.

All three games in this series were shutouts, with Detroit winning the last two games by scores of 3-0. The Tigers put together a bullpen game to win Game 3, and their six pitchers combined to walk just two and give up six hits – five of which were allowed by Brant Hurter, who got the win after 3 1/3 innings fetched.

Cleveland will need to score some runs against Detroit starter Reese Olson if it wants to stay in the series. The Guardians – who have scored nine goals in the last two games – will send Tanner Bibee to the mound.

Later, the New York Yankees can shut out the Kansas City Royals in their ALDS matchup. The Yanks took a 2-1 lead on Wednesday, powered by a solo home run by Giancarlo Stanton in the eighth inning that secured the win, 3-2.

Although he was a little shaky in his start in Game 1 against the Royals – a game the Yankees won – ace Gerrit Cole will get the ball to try to get New York to the ALCS for the 11th time since 2000. Michael Wacha takes the mound for the Royals' season on the line in Kansas City.
