Dozens of monkeys are roaming free in South Carolina. Residents in Yemassee and surrounding areas were “strongly advised” to secure all doors and windows to prevent the animals from entering their homes.

Forty monkeys escaped from Alpha Genesis, a primate research facility in Yemassee, a small town about 26 miles from Beaufort, Yemassee police said in a post on Facebook on Wednesday. The department did not provide information about which monkeys escaped the facility. The company's website says it conducts research projects for government, university and private clients involving cynomolgus monkeys, rhesus macaques and capuchin monkeys.

“Traps have been set in the area and Yemassee police are currently on scene with thermal imaging cameras to locate the animals,” the post said around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday and is working with Alpha Genesis staff to address this situation to solve.

Authorities advised residents not to approach the monkeys and to call 911 immediately if they see any of the escaped animals.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said in an alert that it was working with local authorities to locate the escaped primates, adding: “The public's assistance will be appreciated in efforts to locate these animals and return them to their enclosures.” to bring back, appreciated.”

It is not known how the primates were able to escape the facility, and Alpha Genesis did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment on the incident.
