Mother of Yankees' Anthony Volpe talks about his son's “surreal” exploits in the World Series

On Tuesday evening, Anthony Volpe fulfilled one of his childhood dreams.

The 23-year-old grew up a die-hard New York Yankees fan and hails from northern New Jersey – he even attended the 2009 World Series parade when he was eight.

Ten years later, he was drafted in the first round by the organization he grew up rooting for, and on Tuesday night he had his defining Yankees moment.

With the score 1-2 in the third inning, Volpe hit a grand slam that sent the Bronx Bombers fighting another day in the Fall Classic.

Volpe and his family came full circle.

“This is so surreal,” Isabelle Volpe, the shortstop’s mother, told the New York Post after Game 4. “We were rooting for the Yankees before he was born. The whole thing is a journey. We take him to all these events.” He spent money to meet (Derek) Jeter when he was eight years old and he wouldn't even go to him because he was too shy. Now he's out there doing it.

Volpe and Jeter have since gotten to know each other — the two even took photos together after Volpe was a guest on FOX's postgame coverage on Tuesday. Yankee fans also chanted Volpe's name in the ninth inning, which he said was the “No. 1 coolest moment” of his life.

YANKEES STAVE OFF WORLD SERIES SWEEP, FORCE GAME 5 VS DODGERS

New York had lost the first three games of the series and scored a total of seven runs – they scored 11 in Game 4 alone.

The Yankees are attempting to become the second team in MLB history to complete a comeback from a 3-0 deficit, something only the 2004 Boston Red Sox did against the Yankees in this year's ALCS. Maybe Volpe is this year's version of Dave Roberts, who manages the Los Angeles Dodgers and sparked the comeback 20 years ago.

In fact, no team that's down 3-0 in the Fall Classic has ever forced a Game 6, but the Yankees have a chance to do so on Wednesday.
