MSNBC's Steve Kornacki explains why 80% of Georgia's voting results will be announced early tonight

The country is in an incredibly close presidential race on Election Day, and while most experts warn that the race is unlikely to take place on Tuesday night and could drag on into the coming days, there is one major battleground state that is early could announce results. Very early.

Polls in Georgia close at 7 p.m. ET, but unlike previous years where vote totals took hours to add up, things will be very different in 2024. MSNBC's Steve Kornacki summed it up on “Morning Joe” Tuesday morning.

“This will be different than we have experienced in the past. The law has changed in Georgia and if things go according to plan, we will get a lot of votes in Georgia very quickly at 7 p.m. I'm talking about 80% of the total votes in the first hour. 7-8 p.m. It is a new state law. All early voting and all absentee voting must be reported in the first hour, and so far we have seen 4 million people in Georgia vote early.”

The 4 million early votes represented a record number of early votes for the state of Georgia. In contrast, 2.7 million early votes were cast in 2020.

Kornacki also explained what experts will be paying attention to when these initial results come in for Georgia – particularly whether the Atlanta metropolitan area continues to grow.

“The blue counties in metro Atlanta are large, they are growing very quickly, they are diversifying and they are becoming more and more Democratic. More than 40% of the state's vote comes from these counties. Biden achieved almost 70% of that four years ago. The question on my mind tonight will be: Is the Blue Blob getting bigger?”
