Fans react to new rules of conduct before UT-OU game

DALLAS – As thousands of die-hard fans prepare to visit Cotton Bowl Stadium On Saturday this year, they don't just have to consider the size of the clear bags.

The University of Texas Austin and the University of Oklahoma are preparing for their highly anticipated showdown in one of college football's premier events: the Allstate-Red River Rivalry. Given the competition, the State Fair of Texas increased security and both schools have introduced new codes of conduct to improve the playing experience.

According to websites related to the big SEC matchup, fans are expected to adhere to the following guidelines, which come from the NCAA Constitution and SEC Bylaws:

  • No racist, sexist, threatening or inflammatory language
  • It is prohibited to display clothing, signs or materials containing vulgar or offensive language, including obscene, inflammatory graphics
  • No attempt to enter the competitive space
  • No throwing objects, especially paper, are permitted in the stands or on the field
  • No illegal alcohol, controlled substances or smoking
  • Taking or posting inappropriate photographs of student-athletes, cheerleaders, dance team or band members, and spectators is prohibited

Additionally, clear plastic bags permitted in the stadium cannot exceed 12 x 6 x 12 inches. Fans can find a full list of banned items on the official website.

The Red River Rivalry game begins Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The fair opens at 7 a.m., two hours earlier than usual.
