New York City Marathon 2024: Winners, route map and road closures

NEW YORK CITY – The 2024 TCS New York City Marathon started on Sunday morning with more than 50,000 runners from over 150 countries.

The winner of the men's and women's divisions will each receive $100,000.

The marathon route runs 26.2 miles through the five boroughs of New York City, starting in Staten Island and ending in Central Park.

Here's everything you need to know about today's race:

The 26.2-mile route takes runners through all five boroughs of New York, starting in Staten Island and ending in Central Park. This is the 48th year the race has been held in all five boroughs. Previously, the route ran entirely in Central Park when it launched in 1970. The first race only saw 55 participants finish, while last year more than 50,000 participants took part in the event.

Marcel Hug's three-year streak as men's New York Marathon wheelchair champion is over after Daniel Romanchuk won the race on Sunday.

The Swiss star, nicknamed “Silver Bullet,” had won 16 consecutive marathons, including a gold medal at this year’s Paralympics in Paris. He also won the Chicago Marathon a few weeks ago.

Susannah Scaroni won the women's wheelchair race by outpacing the field. It was her second victory, also in the 2022 race.

It is the first time in the race's history that both the men's and women's wheelchair events were won by Americans.

Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands won the men's race at the New York City Marathon on Sunday and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the women's race.

Both runners pulled away from their closest competitors in the last few hundred meters and took their first victories in the race.

Nageeye was pace for pace with 2022 champion Evans Chebet before taking victory with an attack into Central Park in 2 hours, 7 minutes and 39 seconds. Chebet finished 6 seconds behind.

Chepkirui ran for the first time in New York and prevailed in the women's race ahead of defending champion Hellen Obiri. Chepkirui started running marathons in 2022. She finished the race in 2:24.35. Obiri finished almost 15 seconds behind.
