The Pittsburgh Steelers are 4-2 and in first place in the AFC North, but could make a drastic change at quarterback ahead of Sunday's game against the New York Jets.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday that Pittsburgh will give quarterback Russell Wilson first-team reps in practice leading up to the game he's “up for.” Wilson was sidelined with a calf injury that is now “fully healed,” but Justin Fields played well in his place.

ESPN's Brooke Pryor noted that both signal callers will practice on Wednesday, with head coach Mike Tomlin saying Wilson remains “under consideration” for the Jets game.

On the surface, Wilson has the better overall record between the two quarterbacks.

He's a nine-time Pro Bowler who won a Super Bowl during his time with the Seattle Seahawks, while Fields never quite lived up to expectations with the Chicago Bears after they selected him with a first-round pick in 2021.

However, Wilson went just 11-19 as a starter over the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos and didn't look like the quarterback that was so impressive in Seattle. Plus, he turns 36 next month and isn't nearly as mobile as Fields.

Fields' running ability and ability to escape pressure and keep the game alive has been crucial for the Steelers this season, as he has 231 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

The biggest question surrounding the Ohio State product has always been his passing accuracy, but his 66.3 completion percentage this season would be a career-high. He also threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in six games.

Fields has done all of this while working in an offense that isn't exactly full of playmakers. George Pickens is the only wide receiver with more than 10 catches, and there have even been question marks surrounding him up to this point in the season.

After all, he saw fewer snaps and was fined for leaving an explicit message on his black eye during a game against the Dallas Cowboys. Additionally, Ray Fittipaldo is from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that he had “showed up late to work several times this season.”

Despite all this, Fields has the Steelers at 4-2 and right in the early playoff picture.

But that may not be enough to keep his original job, as Wilson remains as another option.
