A New Jersey Transit train driver was killed and nearly two dozen passengers injured Monday after a train collided with a fallen tree on the tracks, officials say.

The fatal incident occurred around 6 a.m. on the River Line near the Roebling station outside Trenton.

“I was informed today of an accident on the NJ Transit River Line in which the light rail vehicle struck a tree on the tracks, resulting in the death of the train operator and injuries to passengers,” wrote New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. on X.

“An investigation is underway. Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic incident,” he added.

NJ Transit told Fox News Digital that “of the 42 passengers on board, 23 suffered non-life-threatening, mostly minor injuries.”

“The death of the train operator has been confirmed. The remaining 19 passengers were accommodated in a bus. The New Jersey Transit Police are on scene and investigating,” a spokesperson added.

It is currently unclear why the tree was on the tracks.

“River Line service remains suspended in both directions between Trenton and Florence stations due to downed trees on the tracks near Roebling. Replacement bus service will be provided,” NJ Transit wrote on X after the incident.

The River Line branch of New Jersey Transit operates between Trenton and Camden.
