Nurses are injured when driver flees Penn Presbyterian Medical Center after dropping off shooting victim

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A search is underway for a hit-and-run driver who struck three nurses outside Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in University City.

According to Philadelphia police, it happened around 4:22 a.m. Saturday morning when the driver of a silver Jeep Cherokee dropped off a shooting victim outside the hospital's emergency room. The driver is believed to be a man, possibly in his early 20s.

The nurses rushed to the aid of the shooting victim when the driver of the Jeep fled the hospital and hit the nurses.

According to Penn Medicine, a nurse is hospitalized in critical condition. Two other people were treated for their injuries. According to Philadelphia police, the nurse in critical condition is a 36-year-old man who suffered facial injuries and internal bleeding. The other two are both in stable condition.

The shooting victim was a 28-year-old man who was shot multiple times. Police believe he may also have suffered a head injury as the driver fled the scene.

According to police, the shooting occurred in the 1300 block of Belmont Avenue in the city's Parkside neighborhood.

“Earlier this morning, a vehicle arrived at the emergency room at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and dropped off a person who had been shot. Three Penn Presbyterian nurses rushed to the patient's aid and were struck by the driver as they fled. A nurse is hospitalized in critical condition This incident is devastating for our employees and reminds us of the tragic, widespread impact of gun violence on entire communities, against health care workers, harming us all and posing a devastating, unacceptable threat that our employees face every day to save the gunshot victim and care for all of our other patients, even as their own colleagues suffered. We are providing support resources to them and the families of the injured nurses and are cooperating fully with the Philadelphia Police Department in the investigation.
