A final temperature check by The New York Times and Siena College before Election Day shows Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in a tie race.

The latest NYT/Siena College poll on Friday shows Trump and Harris tied in the popular vote, 48% to 48%.

The poll of 2,516 likely voters nationwide was conducted Oct. 20-23, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

The latest poll suggests the race has become even closer since the previous Times/Siena College poll in early October showed Harris with a three-point lead over Trump, although the change is within the margin of error.

“A high-profile debate, two attempts on (Trump's) life, dozens of rallies in seven battleground states and hundreds of millions in advertising spending appear to have done little to change the course of the race,” the Times reported.

What you should consider when taking surveys

The margin of error describes how accurately we can assume that the survey results are representative of the entire population.

If a candidate's lead is “within” the margin of error, it is considered a “statistical tie,” according to the Pew Research Center.

Pew also found that the majority of pollsters have changed their methods since the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, which significantly underestimated Trump's performance.
