Patriots QB Drake Maye leaves the game against the Jets with a concussion

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the New York Jets due to a concussion.

The injury appeared to stem from a play late in the first quarter in which Maye was scrambling for an 18-yard gain. As Maye slipped at the end of the run, Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood's helmet touched Maye's helmet during a tackle attempt.

Maye was slow to get back to its feet but stayed in the game on the final four plays of the drive that extended into the second quarter. After the Patriots punt, Maye walked to the sideline and sat on the bench before being taken to the medical tent for evaluation. He then walked to the locker room under his own power.

Taking over for Maye was the experienced Jacoby Brissett, who started the first five games of the season for New England.

“Just like I told the boys at the start of the game, it's the 'next man up' mentality, no matter what position you play. We need Jacoby to get us to the promised land,” head coach Jerod Mayo told CBS at halftime.

The Patriots initially announced Maye's return as questionable.

Maye's scrambling skills had helped the Patriots take a 7-0 lead as he ran 17 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Coming out of the game, he had rushed three times for 46 yards and a touchdown and was 3 of 6 passing for 23 yards.
