Pelicans Dejounte Murray suffers broken hand on opening night

Dejounte Murray, the man who would lead New Orleans into a new era of success, fell victim on opening night to one of the things that has held them back in recent years – injuries.

Murray reportedly broke his hand. a story first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania and confirmed by other reports. While it's impossible to say how long he'll be out without learning more details about the injury (something that will be announced in the next few days), a best-case scenario with a non-displaced rupture would likely still be a month or longer mean on the edge (based on previous reporting by Jeff Stotts of In Street Clothes).

The injury apparently occurred in the fourth quarter when Murray was guarding Josh Giddey and the Bulls guard was controlling the lane. Murray's hand appears to have gotten stuck on Giddey's jersey. Murray stayed in the game after that, attempted a three-pointer, was fouled and stayed in the game to make the free throws, but was subbed off afterwards and did not return.

Murray scored 14 points with 10 assists and 8 rebounds in the Pelicans' opening come-from-behind win.

The Pelicans picked up the win with 33 points from Brandon Ingram and 23 points from CJ McCollum. Zion Williamson did not participate in the game due to an illness, which the team announced before the game (which caused a stir around the league due to his injury history; we'll see if that means anything). Rookie center Yves Missi had a strong game off the bench for the Pelicans with 12 points and seven rebounds. If he can keep this up, it would be a huge boost for a team that is low on points.

New Orleans will have to continue to win without Murray for a while.
