Penguins mistakes lead to Maple Leafs goals; Pens lose 4-2

The Pittsburgh Penguins (1-2-0) have been typically inconsistent at the start of the 2024-25 NHL season. A bad game. A good game. And on Saturday a game right in the middle.

Their middle game wasn't good enough as the Toronto Maple Leafs (2-1-0) scored two goals in a 2:03 span early in the second period and Mitch Marner scored a breakaway goal early in the third period to make it 4-0 . 2 Toronto win at Scotiabank Arena.

The Penguins made things interesting later in the third period when Evgeni Malkin got assist No. 801 with a rush, a drop pass to Rickard Rakell and a center drive to create a screen. Rakell (1) fired a wrist shot past Toronto goaltender Anthony Stolarz at 12:29.

However, the Penguins were unable to score the equalizer despite trying a few scrums at the net.
