People sign up for Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden not to attend

Opponents of Donald Trump are trying to troll the former president by signing up to attend his rally in New York City without showing any intention, hoping that the former president will show up to an empty arena – but he will probably won't work.

Earlier this month, Trump announced that he would hold a rally at Madison Square Garden in the heart of Manhattan on October 27 – likely to appeal to the minority of supporters he has in the Democratic stronghold state.

Since then, prominent Democrats like George Conway and Rick Wilson have encouraged people to register for free to attend the rally – a prank that replicates a moment from 2020 when thousands of K-pop fans and TikTokers rallied for one But he didn't register for the Trump rally in Oklahoma.

On the social media platform, people shared screenshots of an automated text message confirming they had signed up to take part – but had no intention of actually doing so.

“I reserved my tickets but I think I'll be sick that day,” one person wrote.

But the tactic probably won't work because the event doesn't have proper tickets and is instead on a first-come, first-served basis.

The number of people who can register for the MSG Rally for free is seemingly endless, as the automated text message indicates that it “serves as your ticket” to the event. However, the participant will not be assigned a seat.

“All tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis,” Trump’s event description reads.

It is unclear how rally organizers will determine the number of participants. The Independent has asked Madison Square Garden for more information about organizing the event visit.

The popular Manhattan venue's capacity is 19,500 people. According to the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, Trump's average turnout at a rally last year was about 5,000.

The size of Trump's rallies is a point of contention for the Republican presidential candidate, who vehemently assures the public that hundreds of thousands of people attend and disputes claims that there are often empty seats.

Trump has exaggerated the number of people at his rallies and accused the media of lying to spite him.

He's so adamant about it that he took the bait when Vice President Kamala Harris teased him about it during the second presidential debate.

But even if no one attended Trump's rally in New York, the former president would probably still take the stage and give his well-known speech. Trump has held televised press conferences for small groups and still spoken for at least 40 minutes.
