Phillies are being urged to poach the Red Sox's proposed $72 million star

Phillies are being urged to poach the Red Sox's proposed million star

The Boston Red Sox are heading into an important offseason that could see some key players leave the organization.

Boston had an up-and-down 2024 season, ending with a record of 81-81. That's better than any of the last two seasons, and now it looks like the Red Sox will be active in the free agent and trade markets this winter.

While that is the case, Boston could also lose some players even if it is more aggressive this winter. One player who has been regularly mentioned as someone who could leave the club is star closer Kenley Jansen.

Jansen spent the last two years in Boston and was impressive, but will be a free agent this winter. There were trade rumors about him for months, but the Red Sox stuck with him. That may not be the case for much longer. Also, from the outside looking in, it doesn't necessarily look like Jansen wants to return, but that's speculation.

He will have plenty of suitors in free agency and Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer called on the Philadelphia Phillies to get in on his sweepstakes.

“It was a good year for the Phillies bullpen, which ultimately finished sixth in fWAR,” Rymer said. “But with Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez scheduled for free agency, it will take some effort to keep the good times going through 2025…

“Any number of pending free agents could improve his spot, including Kirby Yates, Kenley Jansen or Blake Treinen. The catch is that they also appear to be more expensive, but it would be in character for the Phillies to choose to spare no expense.”

Jansen is expected to receive $72 million in free agency this winter. Any team that signs him will pay a lot, but he is worth it.
