Pistons star Cade Cunningham is tied with LeBron James in key statistics

Even though the Detroit Pistons are still winless this season, there are still some positive takeaways. One of the biggest is that Cade Cunningham appears ready to make the jump to becoming a star talent in the NBA.

After a strong campaign in 2024, Cunningham has been cited by some as a possible breakout candidate this year. In the first week of the game he seems to be on this path. The Pistons guard was one of the best playmakers in the league and tied with LeBron James for the fifth-highest number of assists per game. The few players who average more than Cunningham include Trae Young, James Harden and De'Aaron Fox.

An improved supporting cast and spacing has done wonders for Cunningham, both as a scorer and as a facilitator. With more freedom on offense, the former number 1 was also able to demonstrate his top-class talents on this side of the pitch.

Cunningham's best result (33 points) came against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but his best offensive performance came against the defending champion Boston Celtics. He completed his first double-double of the season that night, scoring 21 points and 10 assists.

While they remain winless this season, the Pistons have looked significantly more competitive this season. Bringing in some new faces has paid off positively and should soon lead to success. Still, Cunningham continues to solidify himself as a pillar of the franchise.

Looking ahead, Detroit has a chance to pick up a win on the road this week. On Wednesday evening they will face the Philadelphia 76ers, who will be without the services of Joel Embiid and Paul George.
