Player Grades: Cavs vs Magic – Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell lead another win

Player Grades: Cavs vs Magic – Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell lead another win

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been flawless in six games. Let's hand out a few more grades.

These grades are based on our usual expectations of each player.

Donovan Mitchell

22 points (9-15 shots), 3 rebounds, 1 assist

Mitchell once again started the game red-hot from the floor. He scored 12 points in the first few minutes and gave the Cavs a quick lead. For the rest of the game, it felt like Mitchell was idle – but that was only because his teammates helped him finish the job sooner.

Grade: A

Evan Mobley

14 points (6-11 shots), 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks

It was a quiet night in terms of scoring, but Mobley had just as much of an impact as he did earlier in the season. He was a menace on defense and held his first duel against Franz Wagner 8:19 on a poor shooting night. Mobley continues to appear more comfortable in Cleveland's offense, knocking down a three-pointer and working the rock in reverse pick-and-rolls.

Grade: A-

Darius Garland

25 points (8-16 shots), 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block

Garland efficiently led the team with 25 points tonight. He did a good job attacking the drop, making three three-pointers and making a handful of pull-up jumpers at midrange. Garland plays excellent basketball on both ends of the court.

Grade: A+

Jarrett Allen

2 points (1-3 shots), 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block

The Cavs took it straight to Orlando from the jump tonight. Allen's impact was felt throughout, even if his role on offense was lost in translation. It was difficult to feed Allen as Magic giant Mo Wagner dropped back on defense to protect the paint. But Allen remained excellent on the glass, reaching +12 in 28 minutes.

Grade: B

Dean Wade

5 points (1-3 shots), 3 rebounds, 2 assists

The box scores simply don't do Wade justice. His contributions on defense and his ability to space the floor have played a key role in unlocking the Cavaliers to start the season. Although one would certainly wish that he had a more tangible impact on the points tally, Wade's involvement in the starting XI appears to be almost perfect.

Grade: B

Caris LeVert

13 points (5-12 shots), 7 assists, 3 rebounds

LeVert was the second best player for Cleveland tonight. He immediately began to wear down Orlando's defense, and it was LeVert who hit three straight triples for his teammates to keep the Magic at bay during a brief moment of shock in the third quarter. LeVert's versatile scoring and play ability have made him a (very) early candidate for Sixth Man of the Year.

Grade: A+

Sam Merrill

6 points (2-3 shots), 2 rebounds, 1 assist

Merrill has seemingly earned a spot in the Cavs rotation. He was the first man off the bench in every game, even though his shot didn't fall early in the season. That peace of mind must be a luxury compared to the inconsistent role he previously held – and tonight is an example of why that's important. Merrill's night began scoreless, but he drained consecutive three-pointers during a crucial second-half run. Trusting your best shooter to get out of a slump paid off tonight — and it should bode well for the Cavs moving forward.

Grade: B

Georges Niang

7 points (3-5 shots), 3 rebounds, 2 assists

You can't be too hard on a guy who shot at over 50% in double-digit wins. However, although Niang has put in some strong performances, tonight was a bit lackluster. He was rough defensively and his missed field goals weren't pretty. He ultimately scored a +10 in 16 minutes, but also had much better games than this.

Grade: C-

Isaac Okoro

9 points (3-7 shooting), 1 rebound

Okoro has felt like an underdog in recent games. He is the only member of the team who did not thrive under Kenny Atkinson's leadership. Tonight that started to change. Okoro eventually broke free in garbage time, drained two to four three-point attempts and began to emerge with the ball in his hands. We'll see if any action comes from this, but for Okoro it was a necessary sign of life.

Grade: C+

Ty Jerome

9 points (3-9 shots), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals

Jerome becomes a nuisance for opposing ballplayers. He sacked Orlando twice tonight in a second quarter run that completely turned the game on its head. His timely goals and crafty playmaking have given the Cavs juice in their second unit.

Grade: A-

Luke Travers

4 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 block, 4 minutes

It's hard to do more than Travers did in his first four minutes on an NBA court. It was an impressive debut for a player who showcased his diverse abilities abroad. We can't overreact when it comes to wasted time, but this was as good a performance as you could expect from a rookie. Good point, Luke.

Grade: A+
