Police in New South Wales find 40,000 stolen Bluey coins from storage unit World News

More than 40,000 stolen coins based on the hit children's television show Bluey have been recovered by police in Australia.

New South Wales Police said officers searched a self-storage facility in Wentworthville and found a load of Royal Australian Mint bags containing the comic book currency.

Earlier this year, the mint produced coins featuring characters from the animated show worth one Australian dollar (50 pence in the UK). They are considered legal tender.

On July 12, police said 63,000 limited edition coins were stolen from a warehouse in Wetherill Park, New South Wales, months before they were due to be put into circulation.

The so-called Bluey Dollarbucks have been selling online for ten times their face value, with one eBay seller offering a pack of three for almost 600 Australian dollars (£309).

In total, 40,061 of the stolen coins were recovered on Tuesday by Strike Force Bandit – a police unit investigating the theft and named after Bluey's father in the show.

Officers also said they confiscated power tools, clothing and bags from the warehouse, all of which they said were stolen.

So far, three people have been charged for their alleged involvement in the warehouse robbery in July.

Bluey is now one of the most popular shows in the world and first premiered last year Australia in 2018 and began streaming in the UK on Disney+ in 2020.

In April a producer on the show assured fans that there will be more episodes of Bluey After a cryptic season ending, parents feared the show would be canceled.

Sam Moor told BBC Radio 4's Today program at the time: “It's just the question on everyone's lips – no, it's not the end for Bluey, I'm sure we've got plenty more surprises for you in stock.”
