Prairie Berry Winery and Miner Brewing are closing by the end of the year

Oct 24, 2024

Prairie Berry Winery and Miner Brewing Co. near Hill City are going out of business and will close by the end of the year.

“Starting the winery 25 years ago was incredibly difficult and dissolving it will be just as difficult,” said Matt Keck, owner and manager, in a statement.

“Thanks to our customers and employees, we have 25 years of great memories.”

The property is sold.

“The property is being offered in three different parcels and will be listed in the next week or two,” Keck said in response to a follow-up question.

The winery started in Sandi Vojta's father's 500-square-foot basement and grew into a South Dakota destination, said Vojta, who is the owner, winemaker and head brewer.

“From the beginning, our vision was to provide an unforgettable South Dakota experience that people couldn’t find elsewhere,” Vojta said.

“We wanted our wines and beer to be more than just a drink. We wanted them to be part of a beautiful day, a time with a loved one, a meaningful place or a treasured memory. We are so grateful for the customers who trusted us to share this with them and the employees who saw and supported this vision.”

Companies will continue to offer the same products and services until inventory runs out. They will release a few more wines and beers that are still in the tanks, but Vojta will not start anything new.

“Our kitchen, tasting room and brewery are still open and our hours are the same, so we invite people to come by and enjoy these experiences,” Keck said.

Prairie Berry once had a location in downtown Sioux Falls. It then moved to a shared space with Miner Brewing Co. in the Western Mall, which closed two years ago and is now home to Altered Species Ales.

Prairie Berry wines can be purchased for shipping and are available at retail while inventory permits.
