Recall of Wawa brand drinking cups because metal straws cause cuts

A recall notice has been issued for approximately 60,000 Wawa-branded beverage cups after multiple injuries were reported from the products' metal straws.

A statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday warned that the metal straw in the cup “may cause cuts to the mouth and/or fingers, posing a risk of injury.”

Four injuries to the hand and mouth have been reported so far.

The Commission urges consumers to immediately stop using the metal straws and contact Illinois-based Halo Branding Solutions, the cups' distributor, for a silicone replacement. If a customer also wants to return the mug, they can receive a $15 refund in the form of a gift card.

Affected consumers should not attempt to return the cups to Wawa stores, Thursday's statement said. For more information on how to participate, visit Halo's website.

The recalled cups were sold exclusively at Wawa stores in Alabama, Washington, DC, Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland in August of this year. The 24-ounce drinkware came in four different styles.

Pennsylvania-based Wawa claimed that the tumblers recalled by Halo have not been available in its stores since mid-August, noting that more than 5,400 units have been sold.
