Rhode Island Rams storm over Maine to win sixth straight game in front of an enthusiastic homecoming crowd

On Saturday, Rhode Island showed off its full potential as the Rams picked up their sixth straight win, defeating the Maine Black Bears 24-14 in front of a packed Homecoming crowd at Meade Stadium. The Rams (7-1, 4-0 CAA) proved unstoppable, pushing through Maine with three rushing touchdowns and a defensive line that snuffed out any chance of a comeback.

After Maine's Cooper Heisey opened the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown reception from Carter Peevy, it was all Rhody from then on. Quarterback Devin Farrell orchestrated two gutsy drives that each ended with short touchdown runs – one to tie the game and another in the final minute of the first half to give the Rams the lead.

Maine (4-4, 2-3 CAA) tied it again early in the fourth on a 4-yard run by Brian Sanata-Fis, but Rhode Island responded with a fierce response. Farrell connected with Tommy Smith for a 46-yard bullet that brought the Rams to the Maine 3-yard line. Malik Grant capped the drive with a blistering 1-yard run, giving Rhody a 21-14 lead.

Then came the Rhode Island defense. The Rams recorded a season-high six sacks – four of which ended Maine's hopes in the fourth quarter alone. Farrell showed off his playmaking skills, setting up a game-winning 35-yard field goal from Ty Groff after a deflected pass from Smith that increased the lead to two points.

The Rams, now off to their best conference start since 2001, are on a roll. Defensive stars like Emmanuel Gomes, who led the way with 10 tackles, and Carson Primrose, who recorded two sacks, solidified URI's control. Grant added 87 rushing yards to his touchdown, while Farrell went 13 of 24 for 202 yards and two rushing scores.

With 5,450 fans in the stands, URI's Meade Stadium was the place to be. And with Family Weekend next up against Monmouth on November 2nd, another sellout crowd is expected to rally behind the surging Rams.
