River LINE service suspended after accident due to fallen trees on tracks

A River Line train crashed into a tree on the tracks Monday morning, killing the train driver and injuring 23 passengers.

The passengers' injuries were not considered life-threatening and were described as “mostly minor,” according to a statement from NJ Transit.

It said the accident occurred around 6:04 a.m., about an hour before sunrise, when the Camden-bound train carrying 42 passengers was north of Roebling station.

Officials raise concerns: Crime is a problem along the River Line in Burlington County. But officials have a plan.

The River Line schedule shows that the first southbound train of the day left Trenton at 5:45 a.m. and was near Roebling station at the time of the accident.

The light rail line suspended service in both directions between Florence and Trenton because trees had fallen on the tracks.

A replacement bus service was offered.

“We will attempt to reopen as quickly as possible once the on-site investigation is complete,” an NJ Transit representative said Monday morning.

Further details were not immediately available.
