In last night's co-main event of UFC 308, Khamzat Chimaev secured a first-round submission win over Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker by pushing so hard that he caused severe injuries to the Australian's jaw.

During the UFC 308 broadcast, commentator Daniel Cormier showed a particularly graphic image of the injury; This showed that three of Robert Whittaker's teeth had been displaced back into his mouth.

“It’s not good,” UFC CEO Dana White remarked at the post-fight press conference, stating the obvious: “If the teeth are pointing (in different directions), it’s not good.”

Luckily, Whittaker himself seems to be in good spirits, as the popular former champion took to social media just a few hours ago to reassure fans that his jaw was “all right, but my teeth were pulled in by the choke.” .

“Thank you everyone for all the love and support. Sometimes it's a hard job, but that's business. Congratulations to Khamzat, he was the better man tonight and that's all. I felt great, everything was right and I was ready.

“My jaw is fine, but my teeth have been pulled. That's a good excuse to fix them properly now haha. I’m disappointed, but I come back better from every setback and every challenge, so this is no different.”

Whittaker thanked his team and his global fan base for their unwavering support, before admitting he was looking forward to some well-deserved rest and relaxation: “Time to spend some time with the family. I’ll be back soon.”

Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis sent “The Reaper” his congratulations and responded to the Instagram post: “You are an absolute warrior and someone to look up to bro. “You will be back as soon as possible.”

How quick this recovery will be remains to be seen; Sports medicine doctor Brian Sutterer has suggested that Whittaker may need to have his jaw closed while he awaits surgery.

“The treatment will be a type of surgical procedure that involves putting the teeth and bone back into place, placing plates on the teeth and possibly braces,” explained Dr. Sutterer in a video breakdown of the submission.

“There's a real possibility here that Robert Whittaker could have a wired jaw for some time… That's a serious, serious injury.”

Khamzat Chimaev also reacted to the gruesome win at the UFC 308 post-fight press conference, admitting that while he was sorry for causing Whittaker so much pain, it was all part of the game.

“Before I came in here, they showed me. I felt like something was wrong with his chin as I pushed on it. I was sorry about that. I didn't mean to break anyone's jaw, but it's my job to make someone feel pain and make me happy.”
