The highly anticipated spy action thriller “Citadel: Honey Bunny” officially released today on Amazon Prime Video. With Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan leading the cast, the series has created a lot of excitement. Read our review to find out how this web series directed by Raj & DK fares.

Story:

Set in the year 2000, Hanimandhakini – known as Honey (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) – finds herself caught in a web of danger when her past surfaces with a vengeance. Her ultimate goal is to protect her young daughter Nadia (Kashvi Majmundar) from Baba (Kay Kay Menon) and his ruthless gang who are closing in on her. At the same time, Rahi Gambhir, also called Bunny (Varun Dhawan), is looking for Honey. Who exactly is Honey and why will Baba's gang pursue her relentlessly? What hidden connection does she have with Bunny and is there a deeper story between them? Will Honey find a way to escape the threats that surround her? The series reveals these secrets with every episode.

Pros:

Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who was acclaimed for her role in the second season of The Family Man, returns to the big screen in Citadel with Raj & DK, raising expectations high. In her captivating role as Honey – a determined mother and experienced spy – she impresses with a mix of strength and vulnerability and delivers an outstanding performance.

Varun Dhawan complements her excellently as her partner and adds charm and depth to his role. Their scenes together are fun and create unforgettable moments that increase the appeal of the series.

An adorable aspect is the character of Honey's little daughter Nadia, played by Kashvi Majmundar. Her scenes provide warmth and levity, while her interactions with Samantha's character are both endearing and entertaining.

The supporting performances from Kay Kay Menon, Saqid Saleem, Soham Majumdar and Shivankit Singh Parihar are all fine. A highlight is the climactic single-shot action sequence, which is impressively choreographed to create a visually arresting scene.

Minuses:

Despite its star-studded cast, Citadel: Honey Bunny lacks in storytelling. The writing of Raj & DK starring Sita R Menon doesn't quite live up to expectations as it lacks the poignancy and intriguing twists that are often associated with their work. Dialogues by Sumit Arora also seem less effective.

For fans expecting the distinctive story of Raj & DK, the series might be disappointing. The narrative lacks coherence, and frequent time shifts between 1992 and 2000 can be confusing and break the flow and engagement.

As a spy thriller and prequel to the famous series “Citadel”, it lacks suspense and cliffhangers that lack punch. Kay Kay Menon's character, who is expected to have a formidable presence, comes across as underdeveloped and lacks the intensity required of a strong antagonist. Although Simran's character is initially promising, he ultimately feels underutilized.

The action scenes that are essential for this genre lack the necessary intensity to create a real thrill. Compared to the international Citadel series, the Indian adaptation is somehow better but misses the mark of adrenaline pumping sequences that keep the viewer on the edge of their seats.

Technical aspects:

Raj & DK along with Sita R Menon fight to make Citadel: Honey Bunny a captivating experience that lacks well-executed thrills and action. The work of cinematographer Johan Heurlin Aidt is commendable and the production manages to revive the atmosphere of the 90s. However, the music is average and does not add the required tension in some places, and the editing could be more precise to reduce lag in the scenes.

Verdict:

Overall, Citadel: Honey Bunny falls short of its expectations as a prequel to Citadel. Samantha and Varun Dhawan deliver decent performances, but the series lacks the necessary thrills, gripping action and narrative depth that one expects from a spy drama. While there are some entertaining scenes, the slow pace and lack of gripping elements may leave action enthusiasts dissatisfied. This watch is aimed at Samantha's fans, but adventure seekers may need to adjust their expectations.
