SC State football player arrested for possession and DUI after traffic stop

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – The Richland County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) has arrested a former South Carolina State University football player after containers of alcohol and narcotics were found in his car during a traffic stop.

The traffic stop happened after midnight on Wednesday.

Officers said they saw a Chevy sedan driven by Jamare Benjamin, 23, speeding and failing to maintain its lane on Bluff Road.

Benjamin allegedly threw a paper bag out of the car and then stopped when a police officer initiated a traffic stop.

During the inspection, officers said they found containers of alcohol and narcotics. They also said Benjamin was “observed” to be under the influence of alcohol.

Benjamin was charged with two counts of Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, Transporting Alcoholic Beverages in a Motor Vehicle with a Broken Seal, DUI (1st), and Simple Possession of Marijuana. He was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Although deputies referred to Benjamin as a “South Carolina State University football player,” a spokesperson for the university told WIS News 10 that was not the case.

The spokesman said Benjamin left the team on Tuesday, October 8. The reason for his departure is unknown.
