'Scared to death': Democratic strategist James Carville 'very worried' about 2024 election

James Carville, the Democratic strategist who once helped elect Bill Clinton to the White House, says he is “scared to death” of the upcoming presidential election.

Although Carville had previously suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris was likely to win the Oval Office this year, he expressed concern Wednesday that she is running out of time to appeal to voters.

Speaking on MSNBC's “The Beat,” Carville said: “The only thing I feel is that the election is coming up on November 5th. And I’m scared to death.”

He added: “I am very, very concerned.”

Polls suggest Harris has a slight advantage nationally over her Republican opponent, and she recently launched a media offensive to reach out to the public. But Carville said Democrats aren't doing enough.

“You have to be sharp,” he said, arguing that Harris' television appearances this week have put her in a position to answer questions rather than ask them.

“If I have a press conference, I’ll come to it questions the questions,” he said.

Carville said Harris should more directly address the messaging of Republican Donald Trump's campaign, including his misleading statements about the former president's record in the White House and his tariff proposals.

“But we’ll just let it go,” Carville explained, adding that Harris “needs to be a lot more aggressive.”

Carville rejected the notion that Harris, who only became the Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden left office in mid-July, has another month to take action before the election.

“She doesn’t have a month left,” Carville argued. “We have 26 days, because today is over. They will lose four to Hurricane (Milton). … And on the Saturday before the election everything somehow comes to a standstill.”

He added: “So you probably have less than 20 days to really get a message out.”

Early voting in the presidential election has begun by mail and in person in several states.
