Shawn Mendes addresses speculation about sexuality in his new song “The Mountain.”

Shawn Mendes lets his music do the talking.

On his ongoing “For Friends and Family” tour, the “Treat You Better” singer performed his upcoming song “The Mountain,” and in its lyrics he appears to wade into conversations about his sexuality.

“Some days I have a change of heart / You can say what you have to say,” Mendes, 26, sang on stage, according to video footage a fan shared on TikTok. “You can say I’m too young / You can say I’m too old / You can say I like girls or boys / Whatever suits you.”

At the shows, Mendes – who dated Camila Cabello for years and has been publicly linked to Sabrina Carpenter – played new music from his upcoming self-titled LP, out November 15th.

“It was so, so frustrating for me because there were some people in my life that I was very, very close to who were gay and in the closet,” Mendes told Shepard.

He continued: “And I felt this real anger at these people. This is such a tricky thing. You want to say, 'I'm not gay, but it would be fine if I were gay – but there's nothing wrong with that.' I'm gay, but I'm not.” You don't really know how to react to the situation.

At the time, Mendes said he had been called “gay” since he was 15 – and that it affected him.

“I'm not gay and I'm like, 'What does that mean?' “I was having these problems with the sound of my voice and wondering, 'How do I sit?' I'm always the first to cross my legs and sit in this feminine style position and I really suffered from that shit,” added he added.

Nevertheless, the situation opened his eyes and made him realize that he was not alone in this feeling.

“I think a lot of men go through this, and what's worse is that there are just so many men who are gay and in the closet and have to hear something like that and just say, 'I'm terrified of coming.' out,'” he said.

In 2018, the “Stitches” singer became aware of the rumors and opened up about them Rolling Stone“I'd like to say I don't care, but that's not true.”

“Deep in my heart, I feel like I need to be seen in public with someone – like a girl – to prove to people that I'm not gay,” he said at the time, adding: “Still 'In.' In my heart I know it's not a bad thing,” there's “still a part of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.”
